Abortion Procedure

The abortion procedure is different depending on the stage of the pregnancy. As the number of weeks into the pregnancy increases, the procedure is more complex and there could be more complications involved.
  • Below 9 weeks

For a pregnancy below 9 weeks, an early simple abortion would be conducted. The procedure is most of the time painless and it takes less than 30 minutes.

  • 10 - 15 weeks

The procedure is similar as an early simple abortion. However, a preparatory phase is required. It is usually done 1 or 2 days before the actual abortion procedure in Singapore. Medicine could be administered directly to the vagina or taken orally to induce contractions, simulating the process of giving birth.

  • More than 15 weeks

The procedure is much more complicated than a simple abortion. It also requires more than 1 visit to the abortion doctor. Below lists the 4 basic stages for an abortion this late into the pregnancy.

    1. Preparatory Phase

This is the fastest stage and would require only 5 minutes. Medicine is administered and the cervix is prepared for the expulsion of the fetus. One would require to wait approximately 2 days before we can proceed to the 2nd stage. Patients are advised not to eat anything on the day where the final 3 stages of the abortion procedure is conducted.

    2. Delivery of the fetus

Medication is administered to the patient to induce labour. The exact time of the delivery would depend on the strength of the contractions. The fetus is delivered and the umbilical cord is severed.

    3. Delivery of the placenta

The patient would then be placed on anaesthesia. The placenta and uterus lining is removed via dilation and curettage. This process takes less than 20 minutes.

    4. Prevention of bleeding

Medication is administered to the patient via injections to prevent excessive bleeding and infections that could occur after the abortion procedure. Patient wakes up about an hour later.
