Abortion Risks and Cost

Possible Risks & Complications of an Abortion

Abortion in Singapore is considered one of the safest medical procedures for women, particularly in experienced hands and a well-equipped environment.

However, like any other medical procedure, there are risks involved and complications (however rare) that may arise. These include:

Infection

Infections can occur as a result of bacteria or even STDs entering the reproductive organs during the procedure. This typically affects the uterine lining, genital tract, reproductive organs or the urinary system. Incomplete abortions can also result in bacterial infections.

Patients who experience a 38C fever 24 hours following an abortion surgery, accompanied by prolonged vaginal bleeding, severe cramps or abdominal pain and abnormal vaginal discharge should seek medical attention immediately.

Antibiotics are usually administered at the first sign of infection. In the event of serious infections, surgery may be recommended.

Incomplete Abortion

An incomplete abortion refers to an abortion that was only partially successful. Here, the pregnancy has been terminated, but pregnancy-related tissues have not been fully expelled from the body.

Incomplete abortions are characterized by severe cramping or abdominal pain, and prolonged and heavy bleeding. Untreated, they can lead to serious infections.

Patients who experience these symptoms must seek immediate medical attention from their Singapore abortion doctor. The womb needs to be checked via ultrasound to detect and pinpoint the location of remnant tissues. Once the remnant tissues are identified, vacuum aspiration will be conducted to remove them.

Heavy Bleeding

While lightly bleeding after an abortion surgery is normal and expected, passing large blood clots and experiencing heavy bleeding is definitely not. Heavy bleeding accompanied with light-headedness or dizziness is a serious sign of blood loss, which requires immediate medical attention.

Heavy bleeding is typically a sign of an underlying condition such as an injury, infection or incomplete abortion.

Effects on Future Pregnancies

Though an abortion is a very safe and established procedure, women go through risks each time they have an abortion. These risks include infections, perforation and repair of the uterus (which can lead to scar tissue formation) and injury to the cervix (which can lead to a weakened cervix).

Most of these complications, though rare and treatable, are avoidable by simply seeking the help of a qualified and experienced abortion doctor.

With a strong focus on women’s health, family planning and fertility, Dr. Jen Shek Wei has performed numerous safe and successful abortions in a supportive and well-equipped setting. For more information on our abortion services, please call +65 6459 2833 today.

The abortion procedure, from its complexity down to cost, will depend on how far along the pregnancy is, which is why we encourage our patients to make the decision to terminate the pregnancy as early as possible.

My normal fees for consultation and ultrasound are $150 and $100, respectively, with a total of $250. If the consultation takes longer than 15 minutes, the consultation fee will increase depending on the duration.

If you do decide to continue with the pregnancy, any deposit you’ve made will not be refunded, but can be used to pay for the next consultation that is needed for any continuing pregnancy.

Your total expense will depend on the size of the pregnancy, and is inclusive of the fees for the operation, ward charges, anaesthesia and standard painkillers. I also normally perform a Pap smear, which will be charged separately. Injectable painkillers and antibiotics, if needed to address pre-existing vaginal infections, will be charged separately as well.

I hope that everything is now clear about our clinic’s charges. Please do not hesitate to ask if you have any further queries.
