Your period is late. Maybe it’s stress, maybe it’s travel, or maybe it’s that quiet thought you’ve been pushing aside. The waiting, the guessing and the constant checking of the calendar can feel overwhelming. If you are facing an unexpected pregnancy, one of the first questions that often comes up is how soon you can take action and what your choices actually are.
When it comes to abortion, timing matters more than most people realise. In Singapore, where abortion is legal under the Termination of Pregnancy Act, early detection plays a crucial role in determining the type of procedure, the recovery process and the overall experience. Continue reading as we explore how pregnancy is detected, when abortion is possible and what to expect at each stage.
How Early Can Pregnancy Be Detected?
Pregnancy can often be detected as early as one to two weeks after conception, depending on the test used and how your body responds hormonally.
Common ways pregnancy is confirmed include:
- Missed Period: A missed period is usually the earliest sign, occurring about 4 weeks after the last menstrual cycle. By this time, pregnancy hormone levels are typically high enough for a reliable result on a home test.
- Home Pregnancy Tests (Urine): These tests detect human chorionic gonadotropin or hCG. Some highly sensitive tests can identify hCG around 10 to 14 days after ovulation, though accuracy improves significantly from the day your period is due.
- Blood Tests: Blood tests conducted at a clinic are more sensitive than urine tests. They can confirm pregnancy as early as six to eight days after ovulation and provide information about hCG levels, which helps estimate gestational age.
- Ultrasound: An ultrasound can detect a gestational sac at around five to six weeks of pregnancy. This scan is essential as it confirms the pregnancy is located in the uterus and rules out an ectopic pregnancy.
What Is the Earliest Time You Can Get an Abortion?
In Singapore, abortions can generally be performed from around four to five weeks of pregnancy, once a gestational sac is visible on ultrasound. This step is medically necessary to confirm the pregnancy is developing in the uterus.
At this early stage, you may be eligible for a medical abortion. This involves prescribed medication that safely ends the pregnancy and allows the body to expel the tissue naturally. At our clinic, medical abortion is typically offered up to seven weeks of gestation, depending on individual suitability.
If you are beyond this timeframe or if medication is not appropriate for you, a surgical abortion may be recommended instead. Your doctor will guide you through the safest option based on your gestational age and health.
Why Some Women Choose an Earlier Abortion
The reasons for choosing an early abortion vary and are deeply personal. Health considerations, emotional readiness and life circumstances all play a role. What matters most is having access to accurate information and professional support.
Some common reasons women opt for an earlier procedure include:
- A Simpler Process: Early methods, particularly medical abortion, are generally less invasive than procedures performed later in pregnancy.
- Faster Recovery: Earlier interventions often involve shorter recovery periods, allowing many women to return to daily routines sooner.
- Reduced Emotional Distress: For some, addressing the situation earlier reduces prolonged stress and uncertainty, making the experience feel more manageable.
What to Expect During Early Abortion
Early abortion can be carried out using medication or a surgical approach. Both methods are safe when provided by trained medical professionals. The most suitable option depends on how far along the pregnancy is, medical factors and personal preference.
Medical Abortion (Abortion Pill)
Medical abortion uses a combination of medications under medical supervision, ideally up to around seven weeks of pregnancy.
The process involves two key medications:
- Mifepristone: This medication blocks progesterone, a hormone necessary to sustain pregnancy. Without it, the uterine lining breaks down, stopping the pregnancy from progressing.
- Misoprostol: Taken 24 to 48 hours later, this medication causes the uterus to contract, allowing the pregnancy tissue to pass naturally through the cervix. The experience is often described as similar to a heavy period. Cramping and bleeding are expected and may last several hours. Some women also experience nausea, mild fever or tiredness, which usually settle within a short period.
Surgical Abortion
When medical abortion is not suitable, a surgical procedure may be advised. This is performed under general anaesthesia, during which the pregnancy tissue is gently removed using specialised suction.
The procedure itself usually takes between 15 and 30 minutes. After a brief recovery period at the clinic, most women are able to return home the same day to rest.
What Should You Expect After an Early Abortion?
Most women recover physically within a few days following an early abortion. Light bleeding or spotting may continue for one to two weeks, and the next menstrual cycle typically returns within four to eight weeks.
Emotional responses can vary. Some feel relief, while others experience sadness or mixed emotions. This is entirely normal and support from counsellors, healthcare professionals or trusted individuals can be helpful.
You will usually be advised to:
- Avoid sexual intercourse and tampon use for at least two weeks to reduce infection risk
- Watch for signs such as heavy bleeding, fever or severe pain
- Attend follow-up appointments to confirm that the abortion is complete
- Discuss contraception options to prevent unintended pregnancies in the future
